^{2002년 6월 창설된 지반시스템 연구실은 전통적인 지반공학의 개념을 바탕으로 현대적인 이론과 기법을 접목하여 지반공학의 새로운 도약을 선도함으로 세계 최고 수준의 연구실이 되고자 하는 비전을 가지고 있다. 지반시스템연구실은 인류와 문명이 직면한 지반공학적 문제를 해결하기 위해, 근본적인 이론연구와 체계적인 실험연구를 병행하여 최종적으로 이를 활용한 기술을 개발하는 것을 목표로 하여 연구에 매진하고 있다.} 

연구 수행 분야

· Tunnel and underground space development

     - Low noise/vibration rock excavation technology – abrasive waterjet, hydraulic fracturing

     - Tunnel electrical resistivity prospecting system (TEPS)

     - Test and verification of utility tunnelling technology – shield-TBM, vertical shaft

     - Wave propagation in soils and jointed rocks

     - Wave-based rock classification and prospecting system using probabilistic approach

· Construction design for submerged floating tunnel at shore connection 

     - Safe tunnel structure design considering marine, ground, and structural parameters using numerical simulation

     - Joint design for stability at shore connection

     - Ground reinforcement and construction method for shore connection tunnel

· Sustainable geotechnical construction materials and applications: Utilization of biopolymers

     - Soil strengthening and erosion control – slope stability, embankment

     - Permeation and seepage control – grouting, hydraulic barrier 

     - Unpaved road, adobe and earthwall

     - Vegetation and anti-desertification

· Energy geotechnology

     - Production of methane hydrate in the Ulleung basin, South Korea

     - Stability of well bore and surrounding ground during production of methane hydrate

     - Sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) into deep marine sediments

· Computer-based Infra. maintenance  

     - ​Infrastructure maintenance using deep learning / image processing technology

     - Sensor network and automatic measurement system

     - AI-based big data analyses for health monitoring of tunnels
